Florida has two personalities when it comes to animal companions. We love our pets, no doubt. But the state is third in the nation for the number of animals taken to shelters, according to Shelter Animals Count.

It’s a reality quite familiar to the people at Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, one of the region’s oldest and largest animal-welfare agencies.

Begun as the Orlando Humane Society in 1937, the staff at Pet Alliance has decades of combined experience and expertise in the care of homeless animals and in educating the public about responsible pet ownership.

Its mission, ultimately, is to close up shop for lack of animals, but that will not happen soon. In the meantime, Pet Alliance shelters animals until they find homes, to the tune of 5,000 dogs and cats yearly.

The nonprofit’s name reflects a push to get Orlando-area residents involved in animal welfare, seeing it as a community responsibility, and the organization goes far beyond warehousing unwanted animals.

Its methods are comprehensive and include affordable preventive healthcare, a free pet-food pantry, a pet-friendly apartment registry, an AniMeals on Wheels program for seniors and targeted trap-neuter-vaccine-return events to prevent kittens in feral colonies.

Community members can support Pet Alliance by adopting animals, volunteering and donating money and supplies, Director of Development Cathy Rodgers says.

Rodgers notes that Pet Alliance is over two-thirds of the way toward the $14 million goal of its Almost Home Capital Campaign to fund the design and construction of an Orlando shelter to replace the one lost to fire in 2021.

“Through the end of the year, the Orange County government is matching all donations to the campaign up to $500,000,” she says, adding that anyone interested in making a gift to the campaign may contact her at crodgers@petallianceorlando.org.

“It can easily be said that hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats have been assisted by Pet Alliance in the past 85 years,” Rodgers says.
“Orlando is a community that is very supportive of animal adoption.”
