Ask The Expert: Clearwater Beach

Our experts share the best of the best when it comes to touring the Tampa Bay area.

Recently, we sat down with Michael Wagner, lead concierge at the Sandpearl Resort and member of the prestigious Les Clefs d’Or. He shared with us some of his favorite tips and hidden gems along the coast. Check it out.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do in the spring?

One of my favorite times to fish in Florida is in the spring. Plenty of species to target in or near shore such as Snook, Kingfish, Mangrove Snapper and Red Grouper. Many local guides are available. But if you’re looking for great action, hook up with Captain Tyson at Flatsmonster.com and come fish with us.

Q: A guest has one night. Where do you recommend that he or she go for a memorable evening?

I would recommend they start with an elegant meal at Caretta on the Gulf. They offer only the best seasonal ingredients with a picturesque view of the Gulf Coast. Next, embark on a private sunset sail aboard the Kuma Too. A glass of wine in hand as you listen to the waves gently splash against the hull, while viewing an unobstructed view of the sun melting into the Gulf of Mexico, will most certainly set the tone for a most memorable evening.

Q: Where is the best place to get a selfie?

At sunset atop the bridge of the Memorial Causeway leading into Clearwater beach. This view captures the the palm tree-lined causeway leading towards the heart of the island, including the bay and the Gulf Coast. With the entire Island in view including the skyline of beautiful hotels and the majestic sky painted in purple pink & blue, this sunset picture captures the beauty of Clearwater Beach in one single photo.

Q: What’s your favorite hidden gem?

My favorite hidden gem that I am sure the locals won’t be too excited that I am giving up would be Guppy’s on the Beach in Indian Rocks Beach. From the patio you can take in a beautiful sunset while you enjoy some of the freshest local caught seafood. Chef Scott’s daily specials are creative and will keep you coming back to see what he comes up with next.

Q: What would you recommend for a multigenerational group to do in the area?

A boat day with Captain Randy Houseman is the perfect way to spend time with the whole family. Cruising the waters of Clearwater searching for dolphins while traveling to secluded islands like Three Rooker Island where the shelling is out of this world.
