For nearly a century, OUC has been a dynamic, innovative force in the community, ever evolving to meet customer needs. From the beginning, we led by thinking forward—pioneering new products, processes and technologies. Innovation was the driver for many landmark initiatives: building downtown Orlando’s first Gold LEED certified building; launching Orlando’s first community solar farm; capturing landfill gas to be used as a renewable energy source; enhancing our clean-energy portfolio with a floating solar array; helping make Orlando one of the nation’s top 10 electric-vehicle-ready cities; and providing customers with advanced energy-efficient services like OUCooling and OUConvenient Lighting.

As Orlando grew and transformed over the years, so did OUC. Our executive team is embracing change and leading with vision—making strategic connections today to prepare for the demands of tomorrow.

From smart street lighting and public EV charging stations to electric-powered LYNX buses and floating solar, we’re diversifying our portfolio with cleaner, greener energy. We’re also investing in smarter, more sustainable energy solutions and partnering with key stakeholders to implement programs that allow them to focus on their core business while we focus on ours.

As we look to the future, we continue to improve the present by providing our customers with reliable and safe energy and water services, supporting many community organizations, and giving hundreds of hours of employee volunteerism.

We’re dedicated to helping improve the lives of those we serve and building a better community for us all.

The Faces of Talent Solutions that Ignite Potential

Mimi Coenen | Chief Operating Officer, CareerSource Central Florida

Central Florida creates jobs at one of the highest rates in the country in a culturally diverse region that supports regional, national and global markets. Hidden by our region’s impressive job growth is a twin challenge. On the one hand, large numbers of people work hard but struggle for more. They have some education—a high school diploma or an associate’s degree at most. They have passions and aspirations, families to care for and monthly bills to pay. But they earn lower wages, because they need more of the skills employers are recruiting for so their businesses can compete and prosper.

At the same time, high-growth industries like healthcare, finance/technology, manufacturing, and others may starve for highly skilled people. These industries are impacted because they lack the right talent at the right time. CareerSource Central Florida solves the dual challenges of businesses clamoring for highly developed talent to stay competitive and people searching for enduring livelihoods with better wages and the opportunity to grow their skills to obtain a sustainable, rewarding career. CSCF partners as an indispensable resource built to change the equation.

We architect a better employment ecosystem, where career seekers grow into higher-paying jobs, more benefits and more stability, while businesses acquire skilled talent and purpose-built solutions to nurture them. We change people’s lives, transform businesses and create deeper prosperity for our community.

The Faces of Zero-Energy Design

Philip M. Donovan, AIA, LEED BD+C, NCARB | Principal, Zero-Energy Architect
LITTLE DIVERSIFIED ARCHITECTURAL CONSULTING

Driven by data that helps him design low-tech solutions to high-tech problems, Philip often references Occam’s razor, a scientific theory that states, “If all factors affecting a problem are equal, the simplest solution is likely the correct one.” For more than a decade, the exponentially increasing effects of man-made climate change have inspired Philip to craft simple solutions that create better outcomes for our built environment and for the people who live, learn, work, and play in it. His core focus is a regenerative approach to design executed through the template of zero-energy buildings. A net-zero energy building is one that produces as much energy, over the course of a year, as it consumes. Zero-energy design is a holistic approach to creating buildings that, when properly implemented, will reduce a building’s energy use by 75 percent or more. This design approach applies to both new-building design and existing-building renovations and is achievable within current project budgets and schedules. Economically feasible, simple solutions are a specialty of Philip’s in his role at LITTLE, and have already started paying off for school districts, healthcare facilities, and offices across Central Florida.

Philip is a sixth-generation Floridian deeply connected to the state’s natural ecology, including its abundance of sunshine—a source of energy for our community. He is the project architect for NeoCity Academy, Florida’s first net-zero energy school. Philip is part of a team of passionate architects and designers in LITTLE’s Orlando office who work daily to design projects that not only do less harm, but ultimately do more good. They focus on regenerative projects that achieve a successful balance among environmental, economic, and human factors, creating a better future for all of us.

The Faces of Children’s Health

Heather Fagan, MD | Designated Institutional Official for Graduate Medical Education, Nemours Children’s Hospital

Amber Hoffman, MD | Program Director, Pediatric Residency Program, Nemours Children’s Hospital

If you’ve ever had to wait weeks or months for a doctor’s appointment, you know the frustration and fear that fills the time between making the appointment and getting answers. These waits happen when there aren’t enough doctors to meet the need. In Florida, experts anticipate a shortage of 7,000 medical specialists by the year 2025.

To help address the shortage of pediatric specialists, Nemours Children’s Hospital developed its own pediatric residency program and recently welcomed its first class of residents. These 12 physicians-in-training were chosen from among 1,200 applicants from across the country. “Our hospital has grown quickly, in part because of our ability to care for very sick children, including those who have multiple health challenges,” said Dr. Amber Hoffman, program director for Nemours Children’s Hospital Pediatric Residency Program. “Exceptional learning opportunities combined with an expert faculty make Nemours a perfect training ground to teach evidence-based, cutting edge medicine.”

Dr. Heather Fagan, designated institutional official for Graduate Medical Education at Nemours is also enthusiastic about the new program. “At Nemours we’re doing the kind of quality work that attracts nationally recognized physicians and researchers. Our subspecialty programs are world-class and we’re developing a reputation for being a pediatric academic medical center focused on patient safety and quality care.” Nemours wants to do more than train a new generation of physicians. It wants to inspire these new physicians to remain in Florida so they can provide local families with better access to pediatric specialty care, closer to home.

The Faces of Balanced Beauty In Plastic Surgery

Charles E. Newman, Jr, MD  and Dzi-Long Newman, PA-C | Newman Plastic Surgery

Understanding the intricacies of aesthetic balance sets Newman Plastic Surgery apart.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Charles Newman, along with wife and physician assistant, Dzi Newman, have built their Orlando practice on the principles of Balanced Beauty. Their approach utilizes the integration of technology, science, and function to complement each other to achieve aesthetic harmony.

“Patients sometime say things like, ‘just fix it’ or ‘just make it go away,’ requesting procedures they believe will miraculously eliminate their specific problem area.” Dr. Newman cautions that “just fix it” procedures don’t always yield the results truly desired because the modification can throw off the balance of the patient’s overall appearance. “The nose pictured in the magazine may look great on a particular celebrity but it won’t necessarily work aesthetically with your eyes, cheeks, jaw line, etc. Breast enhancement and body contouring can restore proportions that may have changed after having children. However, breasts that are too large can overpower a woman’s frame, making her appear heavy. Our goal is to help patients claim whole beauty. It is not about erasing or replacing individual parts but rather approaching the patient in a comprehensive manner so we can uncover, enhance, and refine each individual’s aesthetic potential.”

The Face of Setting Cities In Motion

Stephanie Smith | Senior Public Policy Manager, Uber Technologies

The City Beautiful is undoubtedly the heartbeat of Central Florida, with millions who live, work, and visit each year, and who depend on—and demand—safe, reliable transportation options. This is where Stephanie Smith, senior public policy manager of Uber Technologies, shines, leading innovative ways to move residents and tourists across the region.

Smith has been with Uber for nearly four years and has established the transportation network company as the premier choice in Florida, even forming an alliance with onetime competitor, Mears Transportation Group. Their mutually exclusive ridesharing partnership now appears in the Uber Rider App and offers Mears’ fleet of taxi and luxury vehicles. But the collaboration doesn’t stop there. ‘Uber Movement,’ a free public website, makes Uber’s vast data network available to city staff, urban planners and civic leaders with travel time in various transport corridors.

There’s also a pilot program underway in downtown Orlando to help alleviate late night traffic, moving revelers more efficiently during peak hours. ‘Rideshare Hubs’ now operate Fridays and Saturdays from midnight to 3AM with dedicated pick-up lanes.

Smith shares that “there is a clear demand for reliable, convenient and affordable transportation options for Central Floridians, and Uber is proud to lead that charge in how people move through cities, opening up the world to new possibilities through its platform.”

The Face of Private Education

Mary Beth Davies | Middle School Director at Windermere Preparatory School Potential

Come to our campus at Windermere Prep, and that’s what you’ll see walking around Middle School—potential personified. It’s pretty magical to witness. I’ve been lucky to be a part of that magic for 20 years.

My journey began as a Language Arts teacher, opening WPS in 2000, with just 175 students, 25 faculty members, and a whole lot of excitement. Committed to our crest qualities of virtus, veritas, and unitas, we set out to deliver something special for our Southwest Orlando families.

We designed unique programs and created still-celebrated traditions. Now, as Middle School Director, I am right where I should be, working with talented teachers who create a magical place in which to learn. Our community offers a nurturing, safe environment, a celebrated culture where students feel comfortable to dream, hope, tinker, explore, even fail—each experience contributing to powerful growth. Speaking of growth, we now have over 1,500 students across campus!

I’m thankful for the students I’ve taught, the families I’ve met, and the teachers I collaborate with, all of them a part of my journey, and many of them still a part of my life. Last year I officiated at the wedding of a student I taught in seventh and eighth grade. I couldn’t be prouder to be a tried and true life Laker.
